#39 - Question/Answer: Recycle Unwanted Computer Hardware

Friday Aug 29, 2008

Q. What do you do with hardware if you upgrade or don’t want it anymore? Do you throw it in the garbage?

A. No, please don’t throw it in the garbage. Computer components contain dangerous chemicals like; lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium which cause caner, high blood pressure, nerve and brain damage. Thankfully many companies are being responsible and removing some of these chemicals from their products. Also, checkout these websites: http://www.epa.org, http://www.epa.gov & http://www.ec.gc.ca

Oil cooled systems!

Monday Aug 25, 2008

For all you squared out there using cooling fans, check out this awesome alternative.  It’s almost completely silent, keeps your temps low, and looks cool to boot… I’m definitely considering it for my next desktop system, if for no other reason than it’s really neat to look at.

Windows PCs Vs. Macs!

Wednesday Aug 20, 2008

Ok, folks, here’s a quick rundown of how I see the Windows vs. Mac issue.  As a relatively proficient computer user, I tend to lean towards Windows systems due to their wide compatibility and low cost for parts, but I’ll try to be fair.

Windows PC:

Pros:

  1. Compatible with a wide range of cheap, high quality parts.
  2. widely compatible with computer games
  3. Teriffic customizability if you put in the time to fully learn the system you’re working with.

Cons:

  1. A little more learning is necessary for system optimization.
  2. More virus/spyware protection applications are generally needed.

Mac:

Pros:

  1. Designed with a specific aesthetic in mind (Both casing and OS).
  2. Keeps itself pretty clean in terms of viruses and spyware.
  3. Has a high level of automation, making it much easier to deal with for beginners.

Cons:

  1. Has a very high cost in relation for lesser processing power due to the necessity of using only the available Mac compatible parts which are far less in variety and quality than PC parts.
  2. Has a high level of automation that can be irritating to more technically proficient users and a hassle to alter.
  3. Very few games are available for Macs in relation to PC.

A good comparison in my mind would be designer clothes versus cheaper clothes.  In most cases (At leasts for mens clothing) you can get decent quality clothes for less money than if you were to buy some designer clothes.  When evaluating the cost and benefits of a designer shirt versus a generic, you generally find that very few pragmatic benefits are gained by choosing the more costly designer shirt.  In the end you wind up paying for a name. As it applies to this case, Apple would definitely fall on the designer side.

That being said, I know lots of teriffic businessmen and artists that insist upon Macs because of the ease of use of the OS, but in all honesty I believe if they became comfortable with Windows it would be just as easy to use.  Because of the costs and restrictive compatability issues of Macs, businesses generally stick to PCs, but in the end it’s all up to you.  just give it a good think before you blow 500 extra dollars for a brand name.

If you don’t buy it, go to a Windows PC distributor and configure a computer.  Check the costs and go over to the Mac store.  Configure an equivalently specced Mac system and compare costs.  That should say it all.
